By this morning the front of our van was well and truly spattered with rook shit. This photo was supposed to show it all over the windscreen but instead it shows a reflection of the tree above with the rook's nests. Before leaving Aurillac we stopped to do a supermarket shop and try our best to clean the van windows.

We travelled south through some beautiful countryside.

This part of the Massive Central is characterised by steep sided wooded valleys.

We visited the old village of Conques. It cost us 6 euros to park here but I suppose that isn't too bad in a tourist trap.

This is the Abbey Church.

Here's the church's façade.

There are these amazing old carvings above the church door.

At the top left are those who go to heaven looking quite pleased with themselves.

The bottom right corner of the carving depicts those who go to hell and are not looking so jolly.

The inside of the church is suitably impressive.

I think that this is the monk's residence block.

The tourist office is housed in this rather nice old building.

Conques is full of nick-knack shops and not very good value eateries.

We moved on south east and stopped for the day at the small town of Villecomtal. The aire de camping car here is really lovely and free to both park and service though you are encouraged to make a contribution and put it in the honesty box. We are parked by a small river. Here's the view from the front of our van.

The parking places are divided by neatly cut hedges. It is a former municipal campsite.

We're the only van parked by the river - all the others are crowded round the electrical power points - the electricity is free here.

It really is a beautiful spot.

We will definitely be making a contribution to the municipality before we leave tomorrow.

Today we travelled 51 miles (82 kilometres). We are at: N44.5362 E2.5640
