Before leaving Lauzet this morning we paid our 1 euro 10  cents tourist tax at the post office. We travelled east to the town of Barcelonnette and then turned northwards.

The road followed the course of this river up a narrow valley.

We climbed up through many hairpin bends to the Col de Vars at 2108 metres above sea level.

From the pass there were marvellous views of the surrounding mountains. We saw a Marmot (a large high altitude ground squirrel) but it ran off before we could photograph it.

We stopped for the day at the off season ski resort of Vars. I always think that off season seaside and ski resorts have a certain charm - they're so bad that they're good if you know what I mean?

We are at the aire de camping cars in Vars. The altitude here is about 1600 metres.

There are some nice views from here if you don't look at the resort.

Ann sought out a remaining snow patch to stand on.

The sun's going down now. This is the best view from our van this evening.

Today we travelled 36 miles (58 kilometres). We are at: N44.5758 E6.6772
