Slapton Ley

On Sunday 14th September we set off in our campervan about miday. Stopped off on the way at Newton Abbot to buy supplies. On returning to the van noticed water dripping out from underneath! Stripped down water tank and found hairline crack in the tank next to the drain plug hole.

Returned home to Widecombe and applied glue and sticky tape to the underside of the tank and sticky tape over crack on interior of tank. Refilled with water - leak apparently cured!

Set off again and traveled to South Hams District Council car park in South Devon situated between Slapton Ley and the sea. Beautiful evening with a bit of a breeze off the slightly choppy sea.

Here's the view towards the sea.

On Monday 15th September it was a bit of a misty morning. Lots of people fishing but no one catching anything.

We went for a walk around the lake.

Slapton Ley is a National Nature Reserve and the largest natural freshwater lake in South West England.

Unfortunately the lake does not have a footpath all the way around it and we were fairly soon forced to start going inland up a small river valley.

There was a nice boardwalk through a primaeval swamp.

Eventually we had to take to country lanes with many ups and downs.

Here's a view back from one of our high points from where you can see Slapton Ley and Start Bay beyond.

We walked through the isolated settlement of Frittiscombe.

We continued through Stokenham, then through Torcross (pub pictured above) and finally back to our campervan.

On Tuesday 16th September we walked north from our parking place along the sea shore - there were some interesting sea shore plants around.

It was another misty morning.

North of Strete Gate there is a wild area away from the road - almost wilderness coast. Apparently this is a recognised nudist beach.

We didn't see any nudists but there were some interesting plants on the beach...............

.............. and some nice stones.

We sat around on the pebbles for quite a while watching the sea before going back south along the shore to our campervan.

Later we walked down to Torcross and had fish and chips at the Start Bay Inn (pictured earlier).

Much windier this morning Wednesday 17th September with some really quite big waves.

It was misty with the sun trying to break through.

Here's where we've been parked since Sunday evening. After breakfast we went home to Widecombe. Bit of a disaster - a tub of cream in the fridge tipped over on the way home and went all over the fridge contents and the van floor!
