Friday 20th May 2022

This morning several paragliders landed close to our parking place at the posh spa. Here's a not very good photo of one of them packing up his canopy.

We set off eastwards following the River Rhone.

We stopped at the city of Sion and walked towards the old centre passing this castle high on it's rock.

There was a lively street market in the old centre.

This is Sion Cathedral.

We went inside.

Rather strangely this very large church is right next to the cathedral.

There is some nice modern stained glass to be seen inside.

We wandered back to our van.

After leaving Sion we headed east stopping to do a minor grocery shop (very expensive in Switzerland) and later for a cup of tea where Ann befriended these cows (cows in Switzerland usually have bells round their necks).

We passed through the town of Brig and then turned north, still following the Rhone Valley up into the high country known as the Goms. We stopped for the day at a disused military airfield just outside the village of Ulrichen. Here's the view from the side door of our van.

We are parked next to one of the old hangars.

A railway line runs between our parking place and the Rhone.

Just across the railway line a bridge crosses the Rhone.

There are a couple of strange looking tent like structures here. Google maps reckons they're for glamping (glamorous camping?).

The rather quaint looking alpine village of Ulrichen is close by. We'll be going through it tomorrow when we leave here.

Today we travelled 70 miles (113 kilometres). We are at: N46.5006 E8.2988
