This morning we said goodbye to our new found British pals and headed for the Puy de Dome a 1400 metre high mountain just west of the city of Clermont Ferrand.

There is a train to the summit. We bought our tickets and waited on the platform.

We didn't have long to wait.

The train left on time and we were soon on our way up the mountain.

The views from the train were quite spectacular.

The Puy de Dome is the remains of an extinct volcano and there are many other similar "Puys" surrounding it.

It only took about 15 minutes to get to the summit station.

There is an enormous communications mast on the very top of the mountain.

The summit area is mainly grassy.

This is the train station and restaurant.

The view down to the surrounding countryside are amazing.

Lots of paragliders launch from here.

We could even see our van parked near the bottom train station!

Here's the view toward Clermont Ferrand.

The remains of a roman temple is being reconstructed just down from the communications mast.

In due course we got the train back down and returned to our van. We went into Clermont Ferrand and bought a few groceries.

We travelled further south and stopped for the day at the village of Tourzel-Ronzieres. Here's the view from our van.

The aire here consists of a number of terraces so everyone gets a good view (there is only one other van here tonight).

Today we travelled 75 miles (121 kilometres). We are at: N45.5300 E3.1345

We also caught the train up Puy de Dome on a trip. They don't seem to have made much progress with the temple in the intervening years! As I recall, we walked down around the north side of the mountain. It was quite arduous!

It looks like you are heading towards the Med. Good to see the weather is improving!

Hi Andy, Good to hear from you. The weather was improving till today but now it's raining sticks and old ladies in the Auvergne! Not sure where we're heading - as usual we don't have any plans. Roger
