Monday 8th November 2021

Yesterday we loaded our van onto the 16.30 departure Irish Ferries sailing to Dublin. We had to persuade  the French authorities to stamp our passports as we were leaving otherwise we would have potentially been regarded as overstayers when we tried to return to the Schengen Treaty Area in the future, Thanks so much Boris! We had a very nice comfortable cabin on the ship.

We arrived in Dublin ahead of schedule this morning and negotiated our way out of Dublin going south.

We stopped off on the way at Roundwood to buy groceries before stopping for the day at Glendalough. Here's the view from the front of our van at our parking place.

This is a really beautiful place.

It is marred to a slight extent by a proliferation of knickknack shops,

The ruins of the ancient monastic site here are really sensational.

There is a very fine 1000 year old 30 metre high tower which the monks would have retreated into in the event of attack.

This is the Cathedral.

The interior of the cathedral..

Nearby is an ancient Celtic cross.

This old church on the site retains its original roof.

We walked through the woods.

This is a really beautiful place. We have been here before but as I remember it was pouring with rain at the time and we didn't really have that good a look around.

We had a good view back to the tower from the woods.

There is a beautiful lake here.

The very large hotel here is only currently open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The tourist trade must be taking a battering right now.

Today we travelled 38 miles (61 kilometres), excluding the distance  we travelled on the ship from Cherbourg to Dublin. We are at: N53.0115 W6.3269

Glendalough means the Glen of the two lakes and in a rock face rising sheer from the shore of the Upper Lake is a small man made cave known locally as St Kevin's Bed. It was alleged to have been used by Kevin who lived as a hermit here. It was quite possibly a Neolithic rock cut tomb. Very difficult to access.

Seems like Saint Kev got up to a lot round here including throwing a woman who was making advances to him off a cliff! A saintly act?
