Tuesday 25th June 2019

We were interested to read in our guidebook about the "Parish Closes" walled churches in this area with a cemetery, ossuary and calvary. This is the first one we visited today at Saint Thegonnec.

In the foreground is a Calvary ( depiction of Christ on the cross) and behind it is an Ossuary ( a store for the bones of those who had to make way for others to be buried in the cemetery).

Here's the church tower.

Inside the church is extremely ornate. Here is the pulpit.

The east wall of the church is covered by enormous carved wooden panels depicting biblical scenes.

In the crypt there is a life size rendition of Christ's burial.

We moved on to the parish close at Guimiliau.

This is the Calvary.

Inside the font is very elaborate.

There are some fine panels on the walls.

Our final parish close of the day was at Lampaul-Guimiliau.

Here's the Calvary.

This oak carving inside is known as a Pieta - Mary holding the dead Jesus in her arms.

I'm not sure of the significance of this.

This is in the church roof.

Tonight we are staying at the aire de camping cars at Lampaul-Guimiliau. The church apparently lost the top of its steeple during a thunderstorm in the 19th Century.

Today we travelled 22 miles (35 kilometres). We are at N48.49405 W4.03912
