Thursday 21st December 2017

Today we visited the stupendous Valley of the Temples at Agrigento. Here's the Temple of Juno.

This is the Temple of Concordia.

Here is the Temple of Hercules.

This is the ruins of the Temple of Zeus which was the biggest of them all. It seems most Greek buildings round here were destroyed as much as possible by the Carthaginians in about 400 BC.

A little further on stands the Temple of Dioscuri.

After viewing the temples we visited the nearby and absolutely delightful Gardens of Kolymethra. These are run by the National Trust for Italy and we got in free due to the reciprocal membership with the NT for England Wales and Northern Ireland.

They have numerous different varieties of citrus fruits growing here. They are all ripe at this time of year and you can pick them off the trees and try the different varieties as you walk around!

On the far side of the Garden and over the railway line is The Temple of Vulcan.

As we walked back to our van we passed the Temple of Concordia again.

The rest of the day was a bit of a let down. We travelled south west down the coast vaguely looking for a supermarket and failing to find one. We passed literally millions and millions of poly tunnels for vegetable production. This is as far south as you can go in Europe so I imagine that it is a very favourable place to grow summer vegetable in Winter.

Eventually we found a small supermarket and bought what we had on our list. We have stopped for the night on some waste ground by the sea at Marina di Regusa. I specially sought this place out as we had stopped the night here in Spring 2012 and on that occasion met a young Tunisian man called Naim. I took this picture at the time and posted it on this blog. Nothing has changed. It's still a really beautiful spot.

Today we travelled 93 miles (150 kilometres). We are at N36.77991 E14.57067
