Sunday 17th December 2017

This morning we serviced the van before leaving the Aire which is intriguingly called "Playtime". It cost us 15 euros to stay there, including use of the washing machine and electricity, but I think we got a reduction as someone inadvertently bolted Ann inside the washing machine room yesterday and she had to hammer on the door for 5 minutes or so before someone heard and came to let her out! As we were leaving Castellemmare we stopped at a lay-by and saw this nice view back towards the town. You can see the Castell and the Mare!

We travelled west and then turned north passing some enormous marble quarries along the way.

We stopped for a while in the town of San Vito Lo Capo and bought a loaf of bread. We saw numerous people riding horses along the beach. We thought that it must have been some kind of special event.

There were a lot of people and horses involved.

We travelled north from San Vito Lo Capo passing this stupendous cliff along the way. We rounded Capo San Vito where the road turned south to the north entrance of the Zingaro National Reserve where we stopped for the day.

It cost us 5 euros each to enter the reserve. Here's the view as we started our walk in.

This reserve is an absolutely fabulous piece of wilderness coast with marvellous vegetation, rock and seascapes.

This photo looks back towards our parking place after we had been walking in for about half an hour.

We saw these fine Agave plants. In Mexico these are crushed and the juice fermented and distilled to make tequila.

We came across this enormous limestone cave.

Ann ventured inside.

Here's one of her pics of the roof of the cave. I'm not keen on these kinds of places. When I was younger I did a lot of mountaineering and it always amazed me that there were such things as joint climbing and caving clubs. I used to know people from some of these organisations and they all said that none of the climber members ever went caving and none of the caver members ever went climbing!

From the cave we walked down to this fabulous pebble beach.

We stayed there for quite a while listening to the waves on the shingle and looking for nice pebbles to take home (this is strictly forbidden).

We then got caught in a heavy rainstorm and got quite wet. Ann collected some herbs for culinary purposes (also strictly forbidden in the reserve).

We got back to our van, dried off, had our tea and settled down for the evening. Our parking place is really sensational right on the cliff edge with fabulous views to the south and out to sea.

Today we travelled 42 miles ( 68 kilometres). we are at N38.12482 E12.78796
