Saturday 9th December 2017

It was very windy and rained quite a bit in the night. This morning the rain had stopped but the wind was as strong as ever. Before we left our overnight parking place Ann went down to the beach to see the waves. As we were leaving, completely by chance, we stumbled across a holiday complex where we had rented a villa for a week many years ago!

We travelled south. Along the way we encountered some dogs.

We also encountered some sheep.

We stopped for the day at the town of Alghero. We went for a walk around. It was all very busy with lots of people out and about.

We had a look around in the Cathedral.

There are some interesting statues.

And paintings.

This painting (or mural?) is on the ceiling of the Cathedral.

The Cathedral has a strangely incongruous neo classical facade.

We walked along the town walls.

There are some reproduction medieval siege engines  on show.

We also visited the nearby church of St Miguel which has this unusual tiled dome.

There are lots of paintings inside the meanings of which were unclear to me.

Here's another.

The Christmas decorations here in Alghero seem to involve red trees.

And lanterns.

And bicycles.

There are a lot of camper vans around - more than we have seen anywhere else on this trip to date. As far as I have seen they are all Italian registered. This evening we went out for a meal at a restaurant in the old town.

To day we travelled 38 miles (61 kilometres). We are at N40.56313 E8.31650

I hadn’t realized that you had visited Sardinia before. What a coincidence that you should find the same place of your stay.
Re the paintings in the Church of St. Miguel in Alghero, I think the nun like figure is of St. Teresa of Ávila, a 17th century Spanish mystic and founder of a religious order. The painting of the rather severe looking black robed man is of St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Order, also Spanish,. Can be recognized by the motto inscribed in the painting and above it which he choose for the order: Ad maioram Dei Gloria’s, - for the greater glory of God.
There has been falls of snow over the country overnight but not here in Meath
