Sunday 24th December 2017

It had been almost dark when we arrived at Raddusa yesterday however this morning we had this nice view from our parking place.

We set off north on minor roads. We had many stupendous views of Mount Etna (3300 metres, 10800 feet). Smoke was billowing from its summit crater.

Here's a telephoto of the summit area.

Here's a view looking south.

This is the summit area taken from the same place.

Mount Etna has left its mark on the surrounding countryside - we passed through many solidified lava flows.

We crossed a high pass and headed down towards the sea on the north coast of Sicily.

We stopped for the day at the town of Caldera and parked on the beach.

From here we can look out to the volcanic Aeolian Islands which include the active volcano of Stromboli.

We had a walk along the beach.

They have some flashy "apres swim" showers.

Today we travelled 106 miles (171 kilometres). We are at N38.16649 E15.18967

Caldera   Street view (looks like there was a circus visiting at the time Google visited)

Thank you for posting such spectacular views of Mount Etna. So strange to see smoke/steam billowing from a snow covered peak. I particularly enjoy your seascapes. Is the water very cold?
A very Happy Christmas to you both Ann and Roger. Hope you have your usual scrumptious feast but I hope you wash it down with a bottle of good Sicilian wine. Unusually we had Christmas dinner yesterday when 11 sat down to table plus 2 babies and a 12th late arrival who only had desserts. We had 3 on offer. Giles is here with us for a few days and Leslie’ is here for 3 weeks. and today, Christmas Day, is Frances’s birthday but I intend doing NOTHING!
Have a great day .

Love, Anne-Marie

Hi Anne-Marie,

Many thanks for your comments and news. You are certainly the number one contributor of comments so far on this trip.

It sounds like you had a marvellous family occasion yesterday. Please pass on our best wishes to everyone.

We've had our Christmas Dinner now and are settling down for a nice (hopefully) quiet night by the sea in South West Calabria.

Love, Roger and Ann.
