On Friday 16th December we left Cirella and travelled north out of Calabria and into Basilicata Region were we stopped for Ann to do a cemetery visit. Anyone following this blog over a period of time will know that Ann is quite interested in cemeteries. Cemeteries round here are really something! The dead have houses rather than graves.

We passed many hilltop settlements along the way. They were presumably built this way for defensive purposes.

We crossed from Basilicata in to Campania Region. Many of the road surfaces around here have been quite badly deformed, perhaps by earthquakes? We found this very large and very empty car park behind a fuel station for our overnight stop. This is some way to the east of the city of Avellino.

Over the road from the car park is a pine forest in which cows were grazing. At least one had a bell around its neck and we could here it tinkling during the night - quite soporific really!
