Today we continued south down the east coast of the "heel" of Italy and after passing the town of Otranto we came into a very interesting limestone area.

We stopped off in the town of Santa Cesarea Terme to look at this amazing fake islamic building known as Villa Sticchi.

Here's a view from the other side.

Eventually we got to Capo Santa Maria di Leuca - the southernmost tip of Puglia. At one time thought to be the end of the world by locals!

There is a refurbished church here - consecrated by the then Pope in 2008.

It's all a bit over the top inside I thought.

Here's the view out to sea from the cape with plenty of cacti.

We then turned north up the west coast of the Peninsula. We had left the Adriatic and moved into the Gulf of Taranto. We briefly stopped by this tower and considered staying for the night but decided to move on.

We've found this nice bit of limestone pavement next to the sea for our overnight stop. We are a little south of the city of Gallipoli - close to Torre del Pizzo. As you can see there is some second world war? archaeology close by.

We went for a walk along the shore.

There was a wonderful sunset.

We could see the mountains of Basilicata (the "sole" of Italy) and Calabria (the "toe" of Italy) across the Gulf of Taranto. Lets hope there aren't any vigilantes round here!
