One of the really weird things that can happen if you spend the night in a campervan in comparatively unregulated places is that you wake up in the morning and find something very unexpected is going on right next to you!

On this occasion what had happened was that the local council work persons had arrived to fill potholes right in front of our parking place! This is only likely to have happened once a year at most so why did it happen on the only day of the year we were here? In our experience these sorts of weird coincidences are much more common than statistical analysis would suggest.

We eventually managed to extricate ourselves from the wet asphalt and made the shortish journey north west to the town of Ona where we stopped for the day. Here's the view of the town from our parking place at the Aire.

We took a walk into town over the river.

Here's the monastery.

Here's the church. Ann tried to go in but some flunky demanded money before she could go in so she explained that she hadn't got any money and left before being told that she couldn't photograph the church either! Nice!

Ann wandered back to the van passing these ducks while I searched the town for a shop. Eventually I found a grocery shop and bought a few items only to be told they don't accept card payments! Luckily I had some cash on me!

For all the town's minor niggles it is set in a beautiful valley with steep wooded hills on all sides. The Aire, seen here, used to be the railway station before the line was closed down.

Between the Aire and the river there is a nice parkland area with picnic benches etc.

Great news from back home! Liz Truss has been forced to resign as our Prime Minister after having in only a few weeks in office destroyed what little credibility our country had left! I never thought that we could have a worse Prime Minister than Theresa May. Then we got that lazy, lying incompetent Boris Johnson who was even worse. Johnson looked almost virtuous compared to the depths that Truss sank to!

Today we travelled 45 miles (72 kilometres). We are at: N42.7360 W3.4138

Thanks Judy. I've toned down the analysis slightly so as not to offend any verbally sensitive readers! Roger

Seems like they have fixed the rules so Boris can't make a comeback, and the bonkers right of Braverman and Badenoch won't get a look in. I guess they might find someone they can stick with for the whole 2 years, but let's hope they won't be able to repair the electoral damage they have done themselves since 2019! There really doesn't seem to be a way to force an election. Mass demonstrations??

Your religious analysis regarding Cheeses made laugh Roger :-)
All is OK back home, we now have quite heavy rain and the East Webburn is rising.
Once again, excellent blog stuff.

Hi Steve, Thanks for your message. We need a bit of rain in Widecombe. We can thank Ann's grandson Henry for that little joke. When he was quite young he told his mum (Ann's daughter Kerry) that he was going to play Baby Cheeses in the school nativity play!

I've signed it for what little good it will do.
