Wednesday 14th October

There was quite a lot of rain in the night but today dawned bright and sunny. Here's a view up from our parking place in Valderrobres towards the church and the castle (probably both still locked).

After a brief walk to the shops and back we left Valderrobres and made the short and pleasant journey of 30 miles (48 kilometres) south west to the town of Morella, pictured here from our parking place at the town Aire. We had crossed from Aragon into Valenciana. We have been to Morella before - we stayed the nights of 26th and 27th December 2012 almost at this exact spot!

We took a walk into town - saw this interesting geology in a road cutting along the way.

We passed the remains of this old aqueduct which used to supply the town's water.

We entered the town walls through this fine gate - pictured here from inside.

Morella has many narrow streets like this one.

We wandered into the Town Hall where these giant effigies were on display. Apparently they were made in 1939 and are carried around the town on festive occasions to represent the Muslim and Christian cultures which are supposed to have coexisted peacefully here for centuries! I think that the town authorities may be guilty of a fairly massive rewriting of history. Why are the Muslims black and the Christians white? Why aren't there any Mosques in town nowadays? Do any Muslims live here? What happened to those who once did?

Ann went to visit the church - it was locked - what a surprise!

We went into an eatery - I rashly ordered a plate of squid - Ann wisely made do with a cup of coffee. The squid was totally vile - rubbery and tasteless - I ate it all as a self punishment for being stupid enough to order it in the first place!

Back at the Aire we had a nice view of the sun setting behind the remains of the aqueduct.
