Friday 9th October

When we woke up in the morning our nice quiet parking spot had become surrounded by lots of cars. There is a market in Limoux on a Friday

We were expecting something quite special when we visited the market in the main square. Actually we were quite disappointed - there was just the usual old rubbish for sale. Maybe all those people turned up for a chat rather than to buy anything?

We left Limoux and headed south up the valley of the river Aude. We travelled through some deep limestone gorges as we followed the river's path.

As we gained height it was as if the trees thought it was later and later in the season and the autumn colours intensified.

We stopped for the night by a reservoir high in the mountains, at an altitude of about 1600 metres above sea level, close to the village of Matemale. We travelled 56 miles (90 kilometres) today.

We went for a walk along the shore of the reservoir - there were Autumn Crocuses growing in great abundance.
