Tuesday 13th October

After last night's sensational electric storm, this morning was calm but overcast. We travelled south, initially over flat terrain but then climbed up onto this high escarpment.

The countryside was arid.

There were many apparently disused farm buildings along the way - some with this characteristic "feathered" stonework.

We travelled mainly on minor roads where it was very unusual to encounter another vehicle. We went through some very wild and remote country.

We saw a sign to a "tumulus" and we went to investigate. It was a bit of a disappointment. The remains of this neolithic cist burial had been grossly over restored with lots of unimaginative modern stonework.

After a quite long journey of 107 miles (172 kilometres) we arrived at our destination for today, the town of Valderrobres in Aragon. We are parked in the town Aire by the river and this nice old bridge.

Over the bridge is this fine gateway into the old town.

The town itself is a maze of narrow streets and staircases.

At the top of the hill is the church (locked).

Next to the church is the castle (also locked). At one time this was one of the residences of the Aragonese royalty.

From the castle we could look down and see our campervan parked far below.

There are a lot of skinny cats around who seem to have to fare for themselves.
