I was up early this morning, about 9.00 actually and I went to the boulangerie over the road to buy croissants and bread. We set off east towards the city of Foix through beautiful wooded hills.

After doing a supermarket shop at an out of town site we tried to visit Foix Chateau seen here. Our sat nav took us down tiny streets to a no entry sign so we gave up and moved on.

Our next stop was the Prehistory Park south east of Foix. It costs 11 euros 50 to get in here but it's really well worth it.

This valley has been inhabited by humans for at least 30,000 years. The Prehistory Park attempts, very successfully in my view, to explain their environment and lifestyle.

In prehistoric times there would have been lots of large grazing animals around here.

And also some large predators.

Unfortunately many of the animals of that era are now extinct.

There are several caves in this valley where prehistoric rock art has been discovered.

Artefacts made by prehistoric humans have also been found around here.

I can see why the old people would have liked it here. The Park is in a magnificent setting.

The prehistoric people were hunter gatherers and would have had to move around. They might have build portable shelters like these.

They would likely have used animal furs to make warm clothes.

The use of bows and arrows to hunt game is featured in rock art tens of thousands of years old.

This man demonstrated how the old people might have hunted.

There were plenty of dummy animals for him to shoot at.

There are some truly incredible rock and water features in the Park.

There is an area where you can learn which tracks were made by which animals.

We moved on south east and stopped for the day at a small rural parking area close to the village of Perles et Castelet.

We had steak, salad and bread for our tea with a nice bottle of red wine from the Nimes area. Then we had fruit meringue and cream for pudding.

Today we travelled 62 miles (100 kilometres). We are at: N42.7314 E1.8043

The Prehistory Park looks like a great place to visit. I was very struck by those tents but I doubt they would be much use keeping out the winter cold. Were all those figures actors?

The people dressed in furs and shooting bow and arrows were employees of the park I think. They would answer to prehistoric person if you talked to them!
