Thursday 1st June 2017

Ann reckons she was up during the "night" looking for the midnight sun but each time it was about to do its' thing it disappeared behind a cloud! This morning was bright and sunny with this nice view from our overnight parking place.

We set off north on route 98 stopping at Borselv to look at what are apparently the most northerly pine trees in the world.

A multilingual sign explains. The only other trees around are silver birches which are not even starting to bud never mind leaf.

Here are the silver birches. From Borselv we traveled east, still on route 98, to Ifjord where we turned north again on route 888.

We crossed two high plateaus, the first one not too severe.

The second one much more difficult with lots of drifting snow.

We were quite releaved to reach the town of Mehamn in one piece. We parked by the airport. The snow the van had picked up on the plateau was melting.

The airport isn't a very big operation.

We did however see a plane come in and go out again.

We also saw the north bound Hurtigruten, MS Kong Harald, come in and go out.

This is the first time we have been north of the 71st parallel in our van. It feels like the end of the world and it certainly is the end of Europe. From now on the only way is back towards Widecombe. We are a bit apprehensive as to whether we will be able to get back over those two high passes.

Today we traveled 138 miles (222 kilometres). We are at N71.02896 E27.83146
