It was still raining this morning but soon cleared up. We left Voss and traveled north east passing this impressive waterfall on the way.

After going through two long tunnels under mountains we stopped briefly at Flam. It is a dreadful tourist trap with boat trips on the fjord and the famous Flamsbana mountain railway which spirals its way up through tunnels to the adjoining high plateau where there is a junction with the main Oslo - Bergen railway line.

After leaving Flam we went through the 24.5 kilometre long Laerdals Tunnel - the longest road tunnel in the world.

Not far the other side of the tunnel is the Borgund Stave Church. Built in 1180 this is the most original of the 28 surviving Stave Churches all of which are in Norway.

Beside the door of the church there is some exquisite wood carving representative of the transition from the viking pagan tradition to medieval catholicism.

After leaving Borgund we started to retrace our route but not on the main road, instead on the historic route through the mountains which had been the link between east and west Norway for centuries. We stopped for the day at a lay by which has this stunning view of a waterfall descending into a wild river.

A couple from Germany turned up and parked their van behind ours for the night. They have a roof mounted tent. Years ago we saw one of these in Kenya. The bloke it belonged to said that it was very useful for keeping the lions off!

Today we traveled 87 miles (140 kilometres). We are at N61.05927 E7.72848
