Saturday 31st December 2016

After saying goodbye to Mr and Mrs M we left Totana and made a quick journey west along the Autovia to the town of Velez Rubio in Andalucia. We passed some strange arid landscape along the way.

After doing a brief supermarket shop we parked at the town's aire.

This small dog seemed to want to make friends with us.

There were quite a few of these unfamiliar red tailed small birds around. Any idea which species these are anyone?

We took a walk into town. There were some good views to the sierras. Note the snow covered peak on the left.

The town is attractive with some nice narrow streets.

There is an impressive church.

On the way back to our van we saw this marvelous mural on the wall of a bar. It speaks for itself. I think it is absolutely brilliant.

Just behind where we are parked there was a Petanka (or whatever they call it around here) match going on.

I forgot to mention that Ann did the clothes washing yet again earlier today. Giz a job! I could do that!

Anyone who has traveled in continental Europe at this time of year will know that they don't let off fireworks on 5th November - they let them off on 31st December/1st January. Anyway we are hoping for a quiet night.

Today we traveled 51 miles (82 kilometres). We are at N37.65234 W2.07376

A very Happy New Year to you both. May 2017 be a very good year for you. I have no knowledge of birds whatsoever but I do like finding out things. I spent quite some time trying to identify your small brown bird with the red tail and think it possibly might be be a nightingale. Have you head it sing?

Happy New Year!

We haven't heard the red tailed bird sing but it seems quite aggressive and attacks other red tailed birds it encounters!

Hi Roger and Ann. Annette sent the photo to Sean, and he confirms Anne-Marie's research - it is indeed a nightingale.

I thought Nightingales were secretive birds which hid in the undergrowth - these jobs are really upfront round here hopping around on the ground and having fights with each other!

Hi again. Bird is a Black Redstart. Female or first year male- which look similar. They do winter in the UK tho uncommon.

Hi Tony,

As you will have gathered from my comment I was not really happy with Ann-Marie and Andy's identification of this bird as a Nightingale! Black Redstart eh!

Roger.
