Friday 23rd December 2016

It was misty and wet in Lannemezan this morning. Had great difficulty getting the van to start. Bought LPG, diesel and groceries before leaving town. The weather cleared up.  Headed  south into the Pyrenees. Spectacular views along the way.

We climbed up to 1800 metres above sea level.

The final crossing from France into Spain was through the Aragnouat to Bielsa tunnel - here we are waiting for the lights to turn so we can enter.

Here we are in the tunnel.

After we came out on the Spanish side of the tunnel we soon encountered this spectacular gorge.

We stopped for the day at the town of Ainsa in Aragon. Here's just one of the amazing views from our parking place close by the old town.

Looking in another direction from our parking place there is a view to this reservoir.

The old fortified town of Ainsa is very scenic.

There are lots of people around - it's quite a touristy place.

Here's the main square.

The church is quite pleasant.

Here is the inside of the church.

We saw this small picture in the crypt.

On a house just outside the church are these Gaudiesque chimneys.

Here's the view out of the sliding door on the side of our van.

As the sun went down there was a marvelous light on the peaks of the high Pyrenees. The mountains pictured here are about 3300 metres high.

There was a fantastic sunset. We went out for a meal in town. Lucky I don't do Tripadvisor or no one would  be going to this particular restaurant in Ainsa - stale bread, tasteless chorizo, bland olives, cold soup, stale cuttlefish, tough asparagus, tasteless creme caramel but okay house wine. However Ann liked what she had which was the main thing as eating out isn't always straightforward for her.

Today we traveled 72 miles (116 kilometres). We are at N42.41835 E0.13482
