Thursday 15th December 2016

Very misty this morning . We made the journey south east to the town of Cognac famous world wide for producing brandy. The aire de camping cars is by the river Charente.  Here's the view to the "new" bridge.

The old bridge ran across the river from this gate. I am not sure why it is no longer there.

The headquarters of all the great brandy brands are everywhere to be seen. Here is Hennessy.

We took a walk around town - the centre is very compact and accessible and mostly vehicle free.

Ann was keen to visit the church.

Inside was quite impressive but nothing really special.

This painting is on the church wall. What's going on here?

Back down by the river we saw this boat which had sunk being rescued.

When in Cognac you have to buy a bottle! Instead of buying from one of the big brands like Martell or Hennessy I chose to buy a bottle from Roullet Fransac whose headquarters is right next to the ship rescue site. I've tried it already and it's very nice.

It's my birthday today. I'm only 71. We're planning to go out for a meal this evening to celebrate.

Today we traveled 64 miles (103 kilometres). Our GPS coordinates are N45.69856 W0.33260

Ah the benefits of a Catholic education! I am fairly sure the subject of the painting in the Cognac Church is the Assumption of the Virgin. This Catholic dogma claims that Mary did not suffer the indignity of burial but was assumed in bodily form into heaven. You look as if you are having a most interesting trip. Those are most remarkable bicycles. Anne-Marie

Hi Anne-Marie,

Great to hear from you.

Many thanks for your learned interpretation of the painting in the church in Cognac! How could she go zooming up to heaven like that?

Yes, the folding bikes are really great. We can explore places we arrive at really easily and quickly in a way which would be impossible on foot or in our camper van.

I hope that you and Richard will be able to come to visit us in Devon before too long. We are always there between mid July and mid September.

Best wishes, Roger.
