Sunday 1st January 2017

This morning dawned bright and cold. We had heard a few bangs in the night but not too much in the way of fireworks. We set off north and climbed up into the Sierra de Maria. Passing the town of Velez Blanco we saw this distinctive flat topped mountain.

The town is dominated by this fine castle.

We continued north over a high pass to the town of Maria.

From here there were marvelous views to the sierra. From Maria we turned west but unfortunately ran into mist which persisted to the town of Orce and beyond. We returned to the main A92 Autovia and stopped for a while for a very large chicken sandwich at a service area.

Shortly before reaching the town of Guadix (famous for its cave dwellings) we turned off the A92 to the north and before long dropped down into a series of gorges.

There is some really striking scenery around these parts.

There is clearly very little rainfall.

The rocks are multi coloured.

We found a good parking place in a gorge next to an olive grove where we stopped for the day. We are fairly close to the town of Villanuerva de las Torres.

Here's the view from the sliding door on the side of our van.

Today we traveled 94 miles (151 kilometres). We are at N37.54561 W3.10080
