Thursday 5th January 2017

Beautiful morning in Ronda. Made a late start and set off west. Before too long reached the town of Grazalema and stopped for a cup of tea.

Really pretty place - one of the white towns of Andalucia.

There is more climbable rock in this one town than there is in the whole of Derbyshire!

After leaving Grazalema we stopped briefly on a high pass.

The light was fantastic on the pass. We then descended towards El Bosque.

We soon arrived in El Bosque, serviced the van and parked at the town aire which is next to the bull ring and has this lovely garden.

We took a walk into town and bought some bread and milk. There are several nice looking eateries

.

We returned to our van and Ann spent some time photographing the plants in the adjacent garden.

Later on we went back into town and persuaded the eatery which we had photographed earlier to serve us a meal even though they were about to close. No sooner than we had sat down this amazing procession passed by.

We're not sure what this is all about but we know that there is a public holiday in Spain tomorrow to mark something called epiphany which is some kind of christian festival.

It was all very spectacular but we have absolutely no idea as to what it was about or what it was celebrating.

Anyway returning to the subject of eating. We started with mixed salad. Then Ann has croquettes made with anything they could catch and I had bull's tail with chips all washed down with a bottle of vino tinto de casa. It was very nice but as you can see we didn't quite manage to finish it all.

Back at the aire there is a Scottish van as well as two Spanish ones. We haven't spoken to the Scottish people yet but we have waved at each other a couple of times. They don't have a GB EU designation on their number plate - they have a SCO EU designation instead which may not be legal but certainly shows commitment!

Today we travelled 32 miles (52 kilometres) - exactly the same as yesterday! We are at N36.75717 W5.51064

I must say the description of your plentiful dinner sounds great - all in all it seems a most wonderful trip and the town of Rondo a spectacular place to visit. The procession you saw was that of The Three Kings who traditionally arrived in Bethlehem on the 6th of January, the feast of the Epiphany. In some parts of Catholic Europe it is a much bigger festival than Christmas Day and special cakes are baked and children leave out their shoes overnight so that the kings may leave them present. During the procession which looks thoroughly modern, sweets and caramels are tossed to the kids on the street.

Hi Anne-Marie, Great to hear from you again. Many thanks for the explanation. Lacking a Catholic education I had no idea what Epiphany was. Why was the procession in El Bosque on the 5th rather than the 6th of January do you think? There were certainly lots of sweets being tossed around! Best wishes, Roger.
