Today we journeyed south through very pleasant countryside.

We were travelling to San Gimignano on the recommendation of our friend Ann Holdsworth. The town presents a dramatic skyline as you approach.

Here's a closer view. These towers were owned by the leading families of the town in the medieval period for the purpose of conducting feuds with each other.

We entered the town through this gateway.

Then up narrow streets...

To small squares.

And further narrow streets.

To large squares.

Here's the main church. We went inside. The walls were painted with biblical scenes which had survived for hundreds of years. Photography inside the church is not allowed.

It was all very impressive.

I can see why San Gimignano is sometimes referred to as the Tuscan Manhatten!

There is however another side to the town. It's absolutely packed with tourist type shops. The last wild boar I saw was dead in a layby in France - not dressed as Father Christmas!

We're staying tonight on the nearest thing to a campsite we've been to on this trip. It's in the countryside about 2 kilometres outside San Gimignano. It's expensive - 22 euros but you get electricity, wifi, showers, washing machine and shuttle bus into town included in the price - as well as an on site restaurant for those who can afford it.
