Monday 2nd May

This morning we went for a walk around Duderstadt. Here is its three spired catholic church.

This panel inside the church is supposed to depict the holy family. I never knew there were so many of them. Which one is baby cheeses?

This is the town hall.

There is another church nearby, this one was locked so I don't know which brand it was.

There were falcons nesting in a specially constructed hole in the church roof.

Also in Duderstadt we saw this interesting tower with a twisted spire.

This is a typical Duderstadt street with old timber framed houses.

Shortly after leaving Duderstadt we crossed the old border between west and east Germany. Even though there has been unification since 1990 you are immediately aware that you are in what was the DDR - the houses are less grand, the roads less good, the tidiness less tidy. The legacy of Stalinism lingers on. We stopped for the night at the town of Aschersleben. This rather austere building was just over the railway tracks from our parking place.

We travelled 80 miles (129 kilometres) today.
