Today Saturday 20th June was quite overcast and at times misty. We visited Duncansby Head the true most north westerly point on the British mainland - nearby John O'Groats is a fake! We saw this interesting road side fence along the way. Not dissimilar to the slate fences of North Wales. It was too misty for photos at the Head itself.

We then moved on to nearby Dunnet Head - the most northerly point on the British mainland.

The mist had cleared and there were some spectacular views

There were two types of orchids growing in profusion.

Here's the other species. We have this one in the wetland next to our house in Widecombe.

Having done Dunnet Head we went a little further west and into Thurso for shopping etc. Not sure who this is but definitely not Dr Livingstone (seagull).

Before leaving the area we braced ourselves and made a visit to the horrendous tourist trap of John O' Groats. We were just in time to see this gang of cyclists arrive from Land's End with a welcome tune on the bagpipes. Grim eh?

I really don't like places of this kind.

This evening we boarded a ferry at Gill's Bay. We had to back our van on down the slipway which was quite interesting.

While crossing the Pentland Firth we saw these Orcas. Sorry for the poor quality of the picture but I was really glad to be able to photograph them at all as they were a long way from the ferry and the light was very poor.

We arrived at St Margarets Hope on South Ronaldsay, Orkney at about quarter to nine this evening.

We are parked for the night in the village centre. There's a nice view from our van over to the ferry teminal. It's eleven thirty now and it's still not really dark!
