Ann was in major van cleaning mode this morning.

After servicing the van we retraced our route a short distance to the town of Aquileia where there are numerous roman and immediately post roman sites. Ann visited some of the sites including this stunning church with a vast mosaic floor.

She went into the crypt.

After having done a supermarket shop we moved on east towards the city of Trieste. The landscape completely changed from  completely flat to very hilly.

We went through this impressive limestone arch.

We parked for the day on the waterfront near to the centre of Trieste. Here's the view through our windscreen.

A local woman with  a couple of young children introduced herself to us. She spoke good English which she said she had learned in school.

We're right on the waterfront here. It costs 80 cents an hour 8.00 till 20.00 and is free 20.00 till 8.00.

We walked towards the city centre along the waterfront and briefly visited this food vending complex called Eatily!

We saw these vans parked at the ferry terminal. The van second from the left has British registration plates and has a welsh flag on the back.

There are some impressive buildings in the city centre,

This is the main square.

We wandered back to our van through the backstreets. There are lots of dedicated motor scooter parking places.

I don't know who this statue commemorates.

It's dark now. Here's the view out of the front of our van.

Today we travelled 46 miles (74 kilomettes). We are at N45.64655 E13.75623

Trieste is where James Joyce spent a number of years living eking out a living by teaching English. There is a bronze statue of him standing on a bridge called the Ponto Rossa on the Grand Canal I believe. If you pass him say hello! Love Anne-Marie

Hi Anne-Marie,

I'm afraid we missed out on seeing Joyce's statue - it was a bit too far for our aged limbs to carry us from where we were parked!
