Monday 1st January 2018

Our neighbours let off a few fairly quiet fire works at midnight which hardly even woke me up! This morning we set off north following the west coast of Italy. We crossed from Lazio into Tuscany.

We passed some typical Tuscan hilltop towns.

We stopped briefly to service the van at the very well thought out and very popular free municipal Aire at the town of Venturina. This sort of facility is very rare in Italy and is a great credit to the Venturina local authority.

We stopped for the day at the town of Piombino where we found this marvellous parking place overlooking the sea. Here's the view through our windscreen.

We walked down to the seashore.

It is very windy today and the sea is quite rough.

From the beach we saw this ship out at sea with the misty outline of the Island of Elba behind it. (We were able to see Elba from Corsica earlier on this journey.)

After we'd visited the beach we had a walk around town. Here's the castle.

The town has this excellent pedestrianised area jutting out into the sea..

From out on the pedestrianised area you can look back at the town.

It's all very scenic.

We wandered around the narrow streets of the old town.

There are some nice looking eateries.

Back at our van we watched the regular ferry crossings from Piombino to Elba and back.

There is a full moon this evening.

Today we travelled 96 miles (155 kilometres). We are at N42.92136 E10.53267
